My analysation of the TV Drama - 'The Tudors'

My analysation of the TV Drama - 'The Tudors'

In the essay I am going to use my skills of denotation and connotation to textually analyze the opening title sequence of the TV Drama ‘The Tudors’. I am going to say how they created a sense of drama and how they draw the audience in.

At the beginning of the title sequence there are many quick and sharp camera changes showing the title sequence of the TV Drama and a mans face. This allows us as the audience to gain a lot of information in a small amount of time. It also allows us to concentrate on one certain character as the last camera shot is of a man which lets us see all of his emotions. This also suggests to the audience that he is the main character as we are made to concentrate on him.

Another way the audience is drawn into watching the TV Drama is the voice over at the beginning of the sequence. This creates the mood and it could also suggest to us the genre of the TV Drama. The person speaking the voice over is well spoken which connotes to us they come from a high class family. This could also suggest that the person speaking on the voice over is the man we see at the beginning as the voice over is happening.

As the girls corset is being drawn in this draws the audience in as the string is being done up. This connotes to us that she feels trapped, being someone she isn’t, doing things that she doesn’t want to do because people want her to. This draws the audience in as we want to find out the real her and we also want to find out why she feels trapped.

We get to witness the knife being taken out of its case which creates tension as it is a close-up shot of the knife. This signifies that men have more power then women as it is a man who is pulling the knife out. There is also non-digetic sound at this point as we hear the sharpness of the knife as it is revealed from the case.

As the audience we are constantly being drawn in as the title sequence is showing many secrets that are untold. As we see two teenagers running after each other, this suggests to us that they are made to act differently then who they actually are. It creates the image to us that when they are together they can be who they really are allowing then to be free and act their age, not to act older.

In the title sequence of the TV Drama ‘The Tudors’ there are many ways in which the producers draw in the audience from the camera angle to sound. They are all used to help, the audience get to know the genre of the TV Drama.
